The 143 helpline is more relevant than ever before. Since the start of the pandemic, the pressure and problems in society have increased significantly, underlining the importance of 143 as an emergency number. Last year, 13,500 callers made use of the free service in Central Switzerland. Telephone 143 recorded a sharp increase in domestic violence, mental illness and loneliness.
Most people seeking help from the Dargebotene Hand were young, female and reported worries about coping with everyday life, psychological difficulties and loneliness. The callers are clearly getting younger. In the past, it was mainly older people who were affected by loneliness. Last year, young people were also affected by the federal government's measures to contain the coronavirus, as modern media consumption often only allows virtual contact and there is no intact environment, i.e. family.
Over the course of the pandemic, the Dargebotene Hand has greatly increased its advisory capacity. The Happel Foundation supported them in this expansion of their services. As a result, more people seeking help were able to contact a competent person in need by phone, chat or email.
